3.1.10: The Spanish heavy metal band, Cripta, collaborated with Paul
Naschy for this Naschy tribute video, which is an excellent blend of
images, both new and old. Naschy was very ill at the time, and his
words at the end of this video were recorded at his son Sergio's
home. This narration is the last artistic work contributed to by
Naschy. The video was available on YouTube previously in a Spanish
only version, but now it's been subtitled in English.
2.26.10: Coming in March is the Naschy Tribute issue of RUE
MORGUE. Number 98.
The issue will contain a previously unpublished interview with Paul
Naschy from 2007,
a Naschy filmography, an interview with Naschy biographer Angel
Agudo, and other
features, including one by yours truly. The amazing cover art is by
Gary Pullin.
2.26.10: Brian Lueth is working on a major Naschy Tribute
publication that promises to be definitive and a mandatory purchase
for any Naschy fan. Many known people from the world of Naschyiana
are contributing. The special Naschy project will include articles,
a filmography (with Naschy commentary from an old issue of Videooze),
remembrances, artwork (four from Neil Vokes!) poems, stills. Brian
has acquired 88 poster images, as well. A professional graphic
designer is offering his services for free, so if all goes according
to plan this will not only be superb in content, but also in
appearance.
As time allows, I will be working on this website
to add more content and streamline
this main page. Naschy lives on!

Mya's HUNCHBACK OF
THE MORGUE - A Preview
The
first appearance on NTSC DVD of this Naschy classic comes from Mya
and will be streeting in January. From what I can tell the source is
the Spanish version (released by Spain's TriPictures several years
ago) with the brief nude scene involving Rossana Yanni replacing the
Spanish clothed edit. Pluses include English subtitles for all three
audio track--Spanish, Italian and English. There's also a photo/pressbook
gallery (borrowing from Anolis' German DVD release of this title), a
comparison between the nude scene and the non-nude one, the American
trailer, and the Italian credits sequences (the beginning credits
have different music replacing the familiar accordion um-pa-pa, and
are white lettering over a black background). Colors are good, with
blacks being very solid. Picture quality is a bit on the soft side.
There's some slight aliasing and shifting to the picture at times,
which will probably be more apparent on better systems will larger
monitors. The DVD can be ordered from Amazon.com

THE HANGING WOMAN

Coming
to DVD in Special Edition
Streeting
September 29, from Troma, will be a Special Edition DVD of THE
HANGING WOMAN (LA ORGIA DE LOS MUERTOS). Though not sourced directly
from original vault elements, this edition promises to be the most
complete one yet assembled, with elements from other versions
inserted into the standard version known as THE HANGING WOMAN. The
supplements are amazing: interviews with Paul Naschy and director
Jose Luis Merino, a commentary from Luis Merino, an interview with
dubber Ben Tatar (responsible for the dubbing of many Spanish horror
films), a "Naschy 101" featurette from Shane Dallmann, a
trailer, and a gallery of photo/poster items from Naschy collector
Thorsten Benzel. Also included will be an early Spanish horror film,
THE SWEET SOUND OF DEATH, starring HANGING WOMAN star Dianik
Zurakowska. All
this for less than ten dollars! Below is a trailer for
this release:
Two new Naschy titles have
come to our attention. The first is a short film, LAS ARBOLES (THE
TREES), directed by Joan Vall.
And
Naschy is headlining for director Juan Pinzas in LAS IMÁGENES
PERDIDAS (LA OTRA MIRADA)/THE LOST IMAGES (ANOTHER LOOK). Naschy had
a role in Pinzas' acclaimed ERASE OTRA VEZ.

Paul
Naschy is now at working finishing the editing of film EMPUSA, with
sound and special effects, and musical cues from composer Enrik Garcia
and a song from the group Dark Moor. Scale models of Waldemar
Daninsky and Alaric de Marnac should be available at the end of
October, and the new graphic novel project, Alaric de Marnac, from
Naschy and illustrator Javier Trujillo is forthcoming. And the massive 600 page/400 illustrations Naschy career
film book, by Angel Agudo and Angel Gomez, is around the corner.
We're hoping for an American publication after the Spanish one!
On
June 6th, the International Film Festival of Alicante will present

Japanese Book on
Naschy; Naschy wins Rondo Monster Kid Hall of Fame Award....
March
23rd saw the publication in Japan of the above book. Most of the
text is by Yoshikazu Ito, with some assistance by Daniel Aguilar,
and an introduction by Naschy, who relates his fascination and experience
with Japan. Black-and-white illustrations, 318 pages.
The
coveted Rondo Awards, voted on by fans of classic horror, honored
Paul Naschy with the Monster Kid Hall of Fame Award. This
award is given to people who have made major contributions to the
world of classic horror. With Naschy's dedication to the Universal
mythos and his modern take on it in countless films, mixed in with
personal passions, Naschy is a most worthy recipient of this
award. Congratulations, Estimado Senor Naschy!
Meanwhile,
the finishing touches are being put on EMPUSA. Hopefully we
will see the film released this year. Naschy's newest project will
be CROTÓN EL GRANDE, which promises to be another important film
from the master, just as ROJO SANGRE was. A cinema school in Cuba
has invited Naschy to participate in its film seminars and
conferences. More on this as we get further news.
And
that's not all! Naschy is writing a novel about one of his
main cinematic characters--Alaric de Marnac. A new Naschy biography
is being finished by Angel Angulo. And there are two film
project in the works with China!

LA HERENCIA VALDEMAR
FILM UPDATES
Filming
of
LA HERENCIA VALDEMAR was completed in October, with the budget
reaching 16 million euros. Postproduction is going to take up
most of next year on the film and should advance the budget up to 20
million euros, a considerable expenditure for a Spanish film.
Naschy's wife, Elivra, and his oldest son, Bruno, have cameos in the
film.
In
November, Naschy begins work on O APOSTOLO/THE APOSTLE, a
stop-motion film, similar to Tim Burton's CORPSE BRIDE. Naschy will
play the role of a sinister priest. Appearing as puppet-like figures
along with Naschy with be such renowned actors as Luis Tosar,
Geraldine Chaplin, and Jorge Sanz. Click here
to take you to the film's website.
Naschy's
EMPUSA is currently in post-production. Music for the film is being
composed by Enrik Garcia, with the group DARK MOOR contributing a
song. CROTÓN EL GRANDE, a new film for the same producer of EMPUSA,
is in the works for April of next year.
A
busy time for Paul Naschy!

FOUR
NASCHY PAL DVDs COMING SOON, TO INCLUDE ROJO SANGRE.. NEW NASCHY WEBSITE
ROJO
SANGRE will get a DVD release in late August in Spain. The film, a
Naschy masterpiece, will be supplemented with 25 minutes of extras. Apparently
in Spanish language only, no subtitles.... Spain
will see the first DVD release of LICANTROPO, the 1996 movie that was
the last 35mm Wadlemar Daninsky film. Street date is the end of
August, but no word on extras or whether the presentation will offer
English dubbing or subtitling. Also appearing at the end of
August will be LATIDOS DE PANICO, but probably in Spanish language
only. (Mondo Macabro is scheduled to release an English-subtitled DVD.)..
Meanwhile, Germany's Anolis
Entertainment will release in November a Special Edition of HUNCHBACK
OF THE MORGUE. Produced in tandem with Germany's BUIO OMEGA filmclub,
the DVD will be similar to their exceptional presentation of Mario
Bava's BLOOD AND BLACK LACE.... In July, Spain saw the DVD release of
MUCHA SANGRE, an outrageous film with a purportedly equally
outrageous performance by Naschy!.... Meanwhile, a new Naschy website has
been launched from Germany also--HOMBRE-LOBO.DE.
