March

text is by Yoshikazu Ito, with some assistance by Daniel Aguilar,
and an introduction by Naschy, who relates his fascination and experience
with Japan. Black-and-white illustrations, 318 pages. The
coveted Rondo Awards, voted on by fans of classic horror, honored
Paul Naschy with the Monster Kid Hall of Fame Award. This
award is given to people who have made major contributions to the
world of classic horror. With Naschy's dedication to the Universal
mythos and his modern take on it in countless films, mixed in with
personal passions, Naschy is a most worthy recipient of this
award. Congratulations, Estimado Senor Naschy! Meanwhile,
the finishing touches are being put on EMPUSA. Hopefully we
will see the film released this year. Naschy's newest project will
be CROTÓN EL GRANDE, which promises to be another important film
from the master, just as ROJO SANGRE was. A cinema school in Cuba
has invited Naschy to participate in its film seminars and

LA HERENCIA VALDEMAR

FILM UPDATES Filming
of
LA HERENCIA VALDEMAR was completed in October, with the budget
reaching 16 million euros. Postproduction is going to take up
most of next year on the film and should advance the budget up to 20
million euros, a considerable expenditure for a Spanish film.
Naschy's wife, Elivra, and his oldest son, Bruno, have cameos in the
film.
In
November, Naschy begins work on O APOSTOLO/THE APOSTLE, a
stop-motion film, similar to Tim Burton's CORPSE BRIDE. Naschy will
play the role of a sinister priest. Appearing as puppet-like figures
along with Naschy with be such renowned actors as Luis Tosar,
Geraldine Chaplin, and Jorge Sanz. Click here
to take you to the film's website. Naschy's
EMPUSA is currently in post-production. Music for the film is being
composed by Enrik Garcia, with the group DARK MOOR contributing a
song. CROTÓN EL GRANDE, a new film for the same producer of EMPUSA,
is in the works for April of next year. A
busy time for Paul Naschy!

Terror Collection!!!

Premiering
in October in Spain will be the first issue of a new comic book
series--Colección Paul Naschy de Novelas Gráficas de Terror (The
Paul Naschy Graphic Novels of Terror Collection). The issue will
contain part one of a two part adaptation of THE BEAST AND THE MAGIC
SWORD. Following that, plans are for a new Paul Naschy story and
then adaptations of HUMAN BEASTS and INQUISITION! The artist is
Javier Trujillo, and the comic will be published by Dolmen. We are
currently seeking a comic book publisher in the United States who
can print these for the English-speaking market here. More
samples of Trujillo's artwork can be found on our Naschy
message board.
THE WALDEMAR
INHERITENCE
1st Update Filming of
LA HERENCIA VALDEMAR moves to Basque country and Leon, to proceed
later on to Madrid and other locations. A month's worth of
filming has already been done in Comillas, in such spots as the Casa
del Duque: ...
the Palacio de Sobrellano:
...
the Cemetery at Comillas:
...
and Gaudi's Capricho:
The
shot is now scheduled for 18 to 20 weeks, and the film will be a
two-parter. Budget is currently 14 million euros, but that is likely
to increase. Paul Naschy
plays the pivotal role of Jervas. Other well-known actors in the
production include Jaenada, Silvia Abascal, Rodolfo Sancho and Eusebio
Poncela. The scope and
expenditure of this production may be the greatest for any Spanish
film. It's a thrill that Spain's legend of fantastique cinema is
taking part in this production. All Naschy fans are eager to see the
result! THE
WALDEMAR INHERITENCE
A HERENCIA WALDEMAR is the
Spanish title. The big news is that this is going to be the next
Paul Naschy film. Naschy starts work on the project on May 28. It
doesn't appear to be a Waldemar Daninsky film, however; rather based
on or inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Naschy's character is
Jervas. The shoot is scheduled for 17 weeks, a considerable length
of time for a horror film, and is being produced by ORIGEN P.C and
LAS CRUZADAS ENTERTAINMENT, who were involved with the mammath
productions of KINGDOM OF HEAVEN and CAPTAIN ALATRISTE. Filming will
take place in Cantabria and Madrid.
This looks to be a significant film in the Paul Naschy filmography,
perhaps his most prestigious ever!

EMPUSA NEARS
RELEASE Paul
Naschy's EMPUSA is in the final stages of post-production and should
be ready in September!
Check our EMPUSA
blog for more information on this film.
Coming in September
A new Waldemar Daninsky Graphic Comic:
LA BESTIA Y LA ESPADA MAGICA
(The Beast and the Magic
Sword)

Above
are two panels from the forthcoming Waldemar Daninsky Graphic Comic,
LA BESTIA Y LA ESPADA MAGICA, from writer Paul Naschy and artist Javier Trujillo.
This is the follow-up to the successful EL RETORNO DEL HOMBRE LOBO
comic that was also the collaboration of Naschy and Trujillo. Naschy
has slightly changed the story by having Kian, the Japanese samurai
that Daninsky meets in Japan, be its first person narrator. "I
have focused the story this way," said Naschy, "because I
believe it confers more drama and mystery." Expect a September
release in Spain.

Carlos Aured 1937-2008 Spanish
director Carlos Aured, who directed Paul Naschy in four classic
euro-horror films, including HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB and THE
MUMMY'S REVENGE, died on Sunday from a heart attack. A shaken Paul
Naschy, remembers their work together and Aured the man: "Thank
you, Carlos, from all those who knew you, and rest in peace."

PAUL NASCHY AND CHRISTOPHER LEE
TOGETHER IN A FILM?
The big news of the year is that
Christopher Lee may join Paul Naschy in Naschy's forthcoming in MI
PERRO AQUILES, which would give Lee the opportunity to play Don
Quixote and appear alongside the Spanish film legend for the first
time. I don't know if contracts have been signed yet, but the film
appears to be "a go" later this year, from a script by Naschy. Stay
tuned for more information!

Naschy's LA NOCHE DEL EJECUTOR

EMPUSA, and Javier Aguirre's EL ASESINO ESTA ENTRE LOS TRECE (1973),
a curious Spanish giallo, with Patty Shepard, Simon Andreu, Jack
Taylor and Naschy (in a smaller role than usual), will be out soon
as DVDs in Spain. No English language or subtitle options,
unfortunately.

ESTEPONA, NASCHY
COMIC AND JAPANESE NASCHY BOOK The
Mark of Naschy has received word that the next Estepona film
festival (that's the horror/fantasy festival created by Paul Naschy)
will honor Christopher Lee and Stuart Gordon. Lee will receive
the Golden Unicorn Award for his career in fantastique, while Gordon
will be getting the Waldemar Daninsky Award for his notable genre
work. Meanwhile,
the Waldemar Daninsky comic book that we have been previewing here
will be finally published in October, in time for the film festivals
at Estepona and Sitges. Naschy
will be heading to Barcelona to appear in the TV series PRIMAL FEAR.
No word yet on the extent of his involvement. And.... Japan
will publish a major book on the films of Paul Naschy. The work of Yoshikazu
Ito and Daniel Aguilar, the book will contain illustrations, photos,
poster artwork, etc, and promises to be a comprehensive review of
the life and career of the Spanish horror legend.
EMPUSA

Poster art by Javier Trujillo
According
to a press release from the production company, Artistic, P.C.,
Carlos Aured has bowed out of directing the new Naschy film. The
replacement director is none other than Naschy himself, who started
his new assignment already two weeks ago. Five more weeks of
filming remain. The last film helmed by Naschy was LA NOCHE DE
EJECUTOR in 1992. Naschy has directed some of his best work,
including EL RETORNO DEL HOMBRE LOBO (THE NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF), EL
HUERTO DEL FRANCES, EL CAMINANTE and EL AULLIDO DEL DIABLO (HOWL OF
THE DEVIL), so the film is assuredly in good hands. The
cast includes Naschy, Saturnino Garcia, Antonio Mayans, Laura de Pedro, Paco Racionero, Cristina Carrión, Maria Jesus Solina, Marco
Sanz, and Alfonso Dorbe. EMPUSA
is a supernatural story of seamen, fishermen,
ships, and a seagull who happens to be a vampire/witch woman.
"I sincerely believe that this is the best script I have
written in my career," states Naschy. Filming started on April 16. The picture
is being shot in the coastal towns of Benidorm, Valencia and Alicante. THE
MARK OF NASCHY will be offering the latest information on this
thrilling project--and, hopefully in the near future, photos too! More
information about this film is available online from a
Mike Hodges article at Fangoria's website. PHOTOS
